How much space does it take up?

The Acqua Garden is a self-contained vertical growing system. The base unit is 42 cm x 42 cm and the overall height of the tower is 145cm.

Why use Coconut Coir?

Plants grow quicker in Coconut Coir - The reason plants love Coconut Coir so much is that it provides their roots easy access to water, air and nutrients. The three things that they need to thrive. In Coir, your plants will spend less effort growing extensive root networks below ground and more time growing above ground. You'll spend less time watering and more time enjoying your plants.

Coir is totally organic. It's made from a bi-product of the coconut tree and is grown and harvested all over tropical areas of the world. Habitats aren't being ruined by the planting of coconut trees, because coconut trees have adapted to grow in a harsh environment by the sea where little else survives. It is a truly amazing product.

Is the Acqua Garden ‘organic’?

When it comes to organic farming, fertilizers must originate from a plant or an animal base. In the world of hydroponics we use minerals dissolved in water as a source of nutrients. In all cases, plants need 16 major macro and trace elements in order to grow healthy. Whether those come from earth minerals or from minerals found in plant compost or in animal manure is irrelevant. Also, by definition, ‘organic’ refers to a carbon-based or living matter which only encompasses plants & animals. Although natural, earth minerals can therefore not be classified as organic. Our approach is as natural and 100% pesticide free as in organic farming.

Will I need power outside?

No the self-watering system doesn’t need to be permanently plugged in. The smart irrigation system runs on a rechargeable battery. Dependent on the watering frequency this will need charging every week or so. The system can be plugged in to the mains and operated that way too.

Do plants really grow more quickly?

Yes. The Acqua Garden is designed to maximise the speed of growth of your plants. From the design of the growing pod, to the use of our unique mix of coconut coir and specially formulated natural nutrients everything has been carefully designed to ensure that your plants are receiving the optimal amounts of water, nutrients and air that they need to grow. The plants in an Acqua Garden do not need to develop extensive root systems, so more of their energy goes into upward growth.

Why do fresh plants have a higher nutritional content?

As soon as a plant is harvested, its nutritional elements start to dissipate. On average, after 3 days 30% of the nutritional value of produce will have been lost. So eating fresh from plant to plate will ensure that you get the maximum nutritional content.
